Marathon Petroleum Corporation is an American petroleum refining, marketing, and transportation company, primarily operating in the United States.
Marathon Petroleum Corporation, based in Findlay, Ohio, operates as an integrated downstream energy company primarily within the United States. Established in 1887, the company operates through two main segments: Refining & Marketing, and Midstream.
The Refining & Marketing segment is responsible for refining crude oil and various feedstocks at refineries situated across the Gulf Coast, Mid-Continent, and West Coast regions. These facilities produce a diverse range of refined products including transportation fuels such as reformulated and blend-grade gasolines, heavy fuel oil, and asphalt. The segment also manufactures aromatics, propane, propylene, and sulfur. Marathon Petroleum sells these products to wholesale customers domestically and internationally, as well as through Marathon-branded outlets and under long-term fuel supply contracts, notably featuring the ARCO brand.
In addition to refining operations, Marathon Petroleum's Midstream segment plays a critical role in transporting, storing, distributing, and marketing crude oil and refined products. Utilizing an extensive network of refining logistics assets, pipelines, terminals, towboats, and barges, the company ensures efficient resource movement throughout its operational footprint. The Midstream segment is also involved in the gathering, processing, and transportation of natural gas, as well as the fractionation, storage, and marketing of natural gas liquids. As of December 31, 2021, Marathon Petroleum Corporation maintained a significant presence with 7,159 brand jobber outlets across 37 states, the District of Columbia, and Mexico, operated by independent entrepreneurs.
