Alliant Energy Corporation functions as a utility holding company specializing in the provision of regulated electricity and natural gas services. Operating through three key segments Utility Electric Operations, Utility Gas Operations, and Utility Other the company delivers essential energy solutions across its service areas. Through its subsidiary Interstate Power and Light Company (IPL), Alliant Energy primarily generates and distributes electricity and transports natural gas to retail customers in Iowa. Additionally, IPL supplies steam in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and sells electricity wholesale in Minnesota, Illinois, and Iowa.
Wisconsin Power and Light Company (WPL), another subsidiary of Alliant Energy, serves customers in Wisconsin by generating and distributing electricity and distributing natural gas. WPL also engages in wholesale electricity sales within Wisconsin. As of December 31, 2021, IPL provided electricity and natural gas services to approximately 500,000 and 225,000 retail customers respectively, while WPL served around 485,000 electricity customers and 200,000 natural gas customers. The company's customer base spans diverse industries including farming, agriculture, industrial manufacturing, chemicals, and packaging and food production.
Beyond its core utility operations, Alliant Energy owns and operates a short-line rail freight service in Iowa, a freight terminal on the Mississippi River supporting barge, rail, and truck freight, and a rail-served warehouse in Iowa. It also offers freight brokerage services and holds interests in energy infrastructure assets such as a 347 MW natural gas-fired electric generating unit in Wisconsin and a 225 MW wind farm located in Oklahoma.
